La Grande Guerre vécue et racontée par un citoyen de Margerides
La commune de Margerides conserve désormais dans ses archives les mémoires de guerre de François Brillaud, qui fut son maire de 1913 à 1939.
Numérisées et transcrites, elles ont été transmises par sa famille au profit de la mémoire collective. De la mobilisation à l’été 1914 aux premières cérémonies du souvenir après la fin du conflit en 1918, ce document illustré, situé entre récit, notes et réflexions personnelles, témoigne à la fois du parcours d’un soldat mais également de la vie en France à cette période. Sillonnant le territoire au gré de ses affectations, François Brillaud observe son pays, avec une curiosité avide pour les lieux qu’il traverse et les gens qu’il rencontre. Au-delà des atrocités du front, il tente de comprendre ce qui attise les haines et dresse les peuples les uns contre les autres, dénonçant « l’égoïsme personnel, qui se traduit en égoïsme des sociétés ». Conscient de la responsabilité de chacun au bonheur de tous, son engagement citoyen passe d’abord par une attention à l’autre.
