Le bourg
La commune de Margerides est délimitée par deux affluents de la Dordogne : au nord, le Lys constitue une frontière naturelle avec les communes de Saint-Bonnet-Près-Bort et de Saint-Julien-Près-Bort ; au sud, la Diège s’enfonce dans des gorges profondes. Aux environs du bourg et des villages des Quatre Vents, de Marly et du Bosdeveix s’étendent encore de vastes pans de forêts.
L’origine du terme Margerides suscite encore de nombreuses interrogations. Pour Marcel Villoutreix, auteur des « Noms de lieux en Limousin », Margerides serait le nom d’une femme, laquelle aurait possédé à l’époque gallo-romaine un domaine foncier dans ce lieu. D’autres proposent une seconde hypothèse. Margerides dériverait de deux mots celtes : mar (hauteur) et (ritum) gué, littéralement le « gué de la hauteur ». Les premiers hommes qui empruntaient la voie romaine traversant la Diège au niveau du Pont de Rotabourg avaient probablement remarqué que le chemin montait pour gagner le plateau, d’où le nom qu’ils auraient donné à ce lieu.
